Ratio and Proportion : Quantative

Ratio and proportion is the heart of arithmetic.  If you understand this chapter properly you can solve virtually any problem in arithmetic.
If two numbers are in the ratio 2:3 means for every two units of the first number, second has 3 units.  This is a mere comparison between numbers, and actual numbers may be way bigger than these numbers.  If you multiply or divide a ratio the comparison does not change. i.e., 2:3 is same as 4:6.
If two numbers are in the ratio a:b then this ration has to be multiplied with a number K, to get actual numbers.  This K is called multiplication factor (MF)
If two ratios are equal then we say they are in proportion.  then a:b::c:da×d=b×c
 or ab=cda×d=b×c.

Chain Rule:

Chain rule is comes in handy when there are many variables need to compare with the given variable.  We can understand this rule by observing a practice problem.

Solved Example:

If 12 carpenters working 6 hours a day can make 460 chairs in 24 days, how many chairs will 18 carpenters make in 36 days, each working 8 hours a day?
Let us prepare small table to understand the problem.

Man Hour Days Chair
12 6 24 460
12 8 36 ?

Now with repect to the Chairs we need to understand how each variable is related.
If the number of men got increased (i.e., 12 to 18), do they manufacture more chairs or less chairs is the question we have to ask ourselves. If the answer is "more" then the higher number between 12, 18 will go to the numerator and other will go to denominator and vice versa. Here answer is "more"
So 460×1812
Next we go to Hours. If the number of hours they work each day got increases then do they manufactures more chairs or less chairs? Answer is more
So 460×1812×86
Last, If the number of day they work increases then .... answer is more.
So 460×1812×86×3624=1380

Solved Examples

1. The ratio between two numbers is 5 : 8. If 8 is subtracted from both the numbers, the ratio becomes 1 : 2. The smaller number is:
a. 10
b. 15
c. 20
d. 25
Correct Option: C
Let the numbers be 5x and 8x.
5x88x8=12
⇒ 10x - 16 = 8x - 8
⇒ x = 4.
Therefore, The numbers are 4 x 5 and 4 x 8 i.e. 20 and 32.

2. The ratio between Sumit's and Prakash's age at present is 2:3. Sumit is 6 years younger than Prakash. The ratio of Sumit's age to Prakash's age after 6 years will be :
a. 1 : 2
b. 2 : 3
c. 3 : 4
d. 3 : 8
Correct Option: C
Explanation:
Let their ages be 2x and 3x years.
3x-2x=6 or x=6
Sumit's age = 12 years, Prakash's age = 24 years
Ratio of their ages = 18 : 24 = 3 :4.\

3. The salary of two friends Ramu and Raju are in the ratio 4:5. If the salary of each one increases by Rs.6000, then the new ratio becomes 48:55. What is Raju's present salary?
a) Rs.10500 b) Rs.10500 c) Rs.11500 d) Rs.12500
Answer : b) Rs.10500
Solution :
Ratio their salary is 4:5
Let the original salary of Ramu and Raju be 4k and 5k respectively.
After increasing Rs.6000, the ratio becomes 48:55
That is,
(4k+6000)/(5k+6000) = 48/55
55(4k+6000) = 48(5k+6000)
220k+330000 = 240k+288000
20k= 42000
We have to find the original salary of Raju; that is, 5k.
If 20k = 42000 then 5k = 10500.
Hence the required answer is Rs.10500

4. The number of candidates writing three different entrance exams is in the ratio 4:5:6. There is a proposal to increase these numbers of candidates by 40%, 60% and 85% respectively. What will be the ratio of increased numbers?
a) 14:15:16 b) 12:15:19 c)13:19:21 d) none of these
Answer : d) none of these
Solution :
Given ratio of number of candidates is 4:5:6
Let the number of candidates for 3 exams be 4k, 5k and 6k respectively.
After increasing, number of candidates become (140% of 4k), (160% of 5k) & (185% of 6k)
That is, (140x4k)/100, (160x5k)/100 and (185x6k)/100
= 56k/10, 80k/10 and 111k/10
Now, the required new ratio is: 56k/100 : 80k/10 : 111k/10
= 56 : 80 : 111
Hence the answer is option d.

5The ratio of salary of two persons X and Y is 5:8. If the salary of X increases by 60% and that of Y decreases by 35% then the new ratio of their salaries become 40:27. What is X's salary?
a) Rs.15000 b) Rs.12000 c) Rs.19500 d) data inadequate.
Answer : d) data inadequate
Solution : Ratio of salary of X and Y is 5:8
Let the original salary of X and Y be Rs.5k and Rs.8k respectively.
After increasing 60%, new salary of X = 160% of 5k = 160x5k/100 = 80k/10 ...(1)
After decreasing 35%, new salary of Y = (100-35)% of 8k = 65% of 8k = 52k/10 ...(2)

Given that, new ratio is 40:27
That is, 80k/10 : 52k/10 = 40/27
This does not give the value of k; so that we cannot find X's exact salary.
Hence the answer is data inadequate.

THE HINDU EDITORIAL: 8-JULY–2017

Electric horses
After a century of spectacular growth powered by the internal combustion engine, the automobile industry is taking a serious look at moving away from fossil fuels, with cars, bikes and commercial vehicles powered by electricity. This quest for electro mobility has surged ahead with Volvo, the Sweden based manufacturer owned by China’s Geely, announcing a shift to all-electric or hybrid models from 2019. At the heart of the discussion is the affordability of e-vehicles (EVs) and the range they can cover on a single battery charge, if they are to become an attractive replacement for conventional motors. There is also the question of the sustainability of making millions of batteries that must be recycled. Progress is being made on some of these metrics, as a result of which the sales of all plug-in vehicles rose 40%, at 191,700 units worldwide, in the first quarter of 2017 over the same quarter in 2016. And the International Energy Agency says in its Global EV Outlook Report 2017 that the year-on-year growth was 60%. But in perspective, electric vehicles today make up only 0.2% of all light duty vehicles in the world. What is enlivening the debate on EVs is the entry of Tesla, with its goal to mass-market electric cars that are efficient on range, and offer a minimum of 340 km on one charge, while also scoring high on design. As the single biggest component in making electro mobility mainstream, attention is focused on battery technology. If Tesla’s assessment is correct, the technological limits of this power source are being pushed constantly: less material is being used to produce higher energy density, and at lower cost. Unsurprisingly, many major automobile manufacturers have announced plans for electrics to cater to both ends of the spectrum: marques like BMW and Volkswagen aiming at several affordable models with a moderate range per charge, and luxury cars from Daimler and Audi that run longer and appeal to keen buyers. Electromobility is also politically attractive. France, which floated a global tender at the 2015 Paris climate conference for a mass market car that costs under €7,000, announced recently that it will end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040. India, which committed to reducing the intensity of carbon emissions under the climate agreement, could give electro mobility a boost through its policy on EVs to be declared by December. Making electric two-wheelers and public transport buses attractive through tax incentives is certainly feasible, since these can be charged more easily and used for short trips within cities. The wider challenge today is to find the natural resources such as lithium, cobalt and nickel to make millions of batteries and recycle them later, besides putting up charging infrastructure across entire countries. The solutions are currently expensive. By contrast, the dilemma underscores the elegance of low-cost non-motorised options for cities, such as bicycles and walking.

The waiting game
Ever since the Maha-gathbandhan (grand alliance) of the Janata Dal (United), the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress defeated an ascendant Bharatiya Janata Party in the Bihar elections of 2015, the belief has been that the opposition’s efforts to regroup at the national level will coalesce around these parties. So, when Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar broke ranks and committed the JD(U)’s support to the BJP’s presidential nominee, Ram Nath Kovind, it came as a setback for the entire opposition. Mr. Kovind was the Governor of Bihar till June, and Mr. Kumar called the support a one-of move on account of goodwill for him. Nonetheless, he went on to castigate the Congress for being unable to come up with a coherent alternative to that of the BJP’s agenda, saying a “reactive narrative” would not enable opposition unity. Mr. Kumar’s concerns are not without merit. The Congress put forth the candidature of Meira Kumar clearly as a reactive measure to counter the BJP’s nomination of a Dalit candidate. Till then, the opposition parties had been unable to agree on a candidate due to either a lack of consensus or an inability to set a proactive agenda against the BJP, which seemed to be shaping the contours of the political discourse with ease. But other opposition parties have reason to doubt whether Mr. Kumar was indeed speaking out of a genuine concern for building a strong opposition to the BJP, or working on an exit strategy from the opposition camp so that he could ally with the BJP in time for the 2020 Assembly polls, if not the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. Mr. Kumar had parted ways with the BJP just ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election, making an issue of the nomination of Narendra Modi as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. Although the JD(U) makes up the numbers in the Assembly in alliance with the RJD, he knows he could forge a winning combination with the BJP too. This is especially so in the context of the family of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who is himself out on bail in a corruption case, coming under intense pressure from the Central Bureau of Investigation in recent weeks for alleged irregularities. Mr. Kumar had built his initial support base on an anti-corruption platform directed primarily at Mr. Prasad, and a break in ties with the RJD would perhaps not be as much of a surprise as his decision to ally with that party was. By creating this political flutter, Mr. Kumar could also be seeking to increase his own relevance within the opposition to make a bid for the leadership position. He is perceived to be among the possible challengers to Mr. Modi in 2019, and he may be looking to increase his own stock at the expense of the Congress’s. The conflicting signals coming from Mr. Kumar therefore may not reflect any confusion; instead, these could very well be the result of a calculating mind playing the waiting game.
