The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to set up an Eco-Park on over 34 acres of land retrieve from encroachers in the state’s Rajouri district announced on 25th of Aug 2017.

Supreme Court rules Right to Privacy as Fundamental Right
On August 24, 2017 The Supreme Court (SC) ruled that privacy is a fundamental right because it is essential to the right to life.
i.A nine-judge Supreme Court bench declared privacy is a fundamental right that may impact everything from the government’s signature Aadhaar programme to civil liberty, rights to collection and use of personal data by Internet and financial firms. The decision can also impact restrictions on right to convert and choice of food.
ii.Chief Justice JS Khehar informed that ruled privacy was part of the fundamental right to life and personal liberty guaranteed to all citizens under Article 21 of the Constitution.
iv.The judgment will have a crucial bearing on the government’s Aadhaar scheme that collects personal details, biometrics to identify beneficiaries for accessing social benefits and government welfare scheme.

1. Home Minister Launches Digital Police Portal
Ministry of Home Affairs undertakes steps to integrate the various organs of the Criminal Justice System such as the Police, Courts, Prisons, Prosecution, Forensic Laboratories, Finger Prints and Juvenile Homes with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) database.
  • Launching the Digital Police Portal under the CCTNS project, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said this Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) will be a useful resource for all stakeholders including the policy makers.
  • According to Home Ministry, the Digital Police Portal will enable citizens to register FIRs online and the portal will initially offer seven Public Delivery Services in 34 States & UTs, like Person and Address Verification e.g. of employees, tenants, nurses etc, permission for hosting Public Events, Lost & Found Articles and Vehicle theft etc.
  • Besides, the portal will enable restricted access to law enforcement agencies on topics such as Antecedent Verification and make assessment of FIRs.

GOIs Street Lighting National Programme illuminates 50,000 KM of Indian roads
Government of India’s Street Lighting National programme (SLNP) has illuminated 50,000 KM of Indian roads with installation of 30 lakh LED street lights across the country. With this milestone Energy Efficiency Services Limited has become the world’s largest street light management company.
·         Street Light National Programme (SLNP) was launched by Government of India in January 2015, with an aim to replace 3.5 crore conventional street lightswith energy efficient LED lights.
·         This replacement drive will result in saving of 9,000 million units annually, which translates into savings of Rs. 5500 crore.
·         Under this programme, EESL replaces the conventional street lights with LEDs at its own costs. Gains accrued to municipality due to reduction in energy and maintenance cost is used to repay EESL over a 7-year period.
