Modi announced that India will host the first summit of the
International Solar Alliance (IAS) in March.

International Dam Safety Conference-2018 was held in Kovalam,
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) from January 23-24, 2018.

Coast Guard patrol
vessel Vijaya launched
‘Vijaya’, the
second offshore patrol vessel (OPV) built by the Larsen and Toubro Shipyard for the Indian
Coast Guard has been launched.

The indigenously
built vessel ‘Vijaya’, equipped with state-of art radar, navigational and
communication system, will be utilised for day and night patrol and
surveillance, anti-terrorist, anti-smuggling operations and coastal security.

10th Global Forum
for Food & Agriculture held in Berlin
The 10th edition
of Global Forum for Food & Agriculture was held in Berlin, Germany from
18th -20th January 2018. The theme of this year’s event is “Shaping the
future of livestock – sustainably, responsibly, efficiently”.

The Global Forum
for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) is an international conference held during
International Green Week (IGW) that focuses on central questions concerning the
future of the global agri-food industry.
Malta’s Valletta
Becomes Europe’s Capital of Culture
Valletta, the
capital of Malta officially named European Capital of Culture 2018. Valletta will share the
title with Leeuwarden, a city in the Netherlands.

Notably, the
‘European Capitals of Culture’ initiative aims to highlight the diversity of
European culture and to increase the citizens’ sense of belonging to a common
cultural area.

IOB joins hands
with National Housing Board
Leading Public
Sector Bank (PSB), Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) announced a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with National Housing Bank for implementation of
the Rural Housing Interest Subsidy Scheme (RHISS) of the Ministry of Rural
Development. IOB is one of first major public sector bank to execute
the MoU to implement the scheme.
ECONOMY
India fifth most
attractive market for investments: CEOs survey
India has emerged
as the fifth most attractive market for investments and the optimism over
global economic growth is at a record level, according to a survey of CEOs by
global consultancy PwC.

Around 46 per cent
of global CEOs consider the US as one of the three most important
countries for growth, followed by China (33 per cent) and Germany (20 per
cent) at second and third places, respectively. At the fourth spot is the UK
(15 per cent).
·
“India (9 per
cent) bumps Japan (8 per cent) as the fifth most attractive market in 2018,” it
noted.
RIL becomes India’s
first firm to cross ₹6-lakh crore market cap
Reliance
Industries (RIL) become the first Indian company to cross the ₹6-lakh crore mark
in market capitalisation as its shares touched a 52-week high of ₹974.5.

Bank become the first bank to cross market capitalisation of ₹5 lakh crore.

West Indies to host
2018 Women’s World T20
The 2018 ICC
Women’s World Twenty20 will be hosted in the West Indies from 9 to 24 November
2018, during the 2018–19 international cricket season. It will be the sixth
edition of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20, and the second hosted by the West
Indies (after the 2010 edition).

OBITUARIES
Award-winning
fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin passes away
American Novelist
Ursula K Le Guin, one of the greatest science-fiction and fantasy authors, has passed away at the age
of 88. Le Guin’s work spanned multiple genres and categories but is best known
for her work in the science fiction and fantasy realm.

She is
particularly well-known for her series of young adult fantasy books that take
place in the world of Earthsea, as well as her science-fiction novel ‘The Left
Hand of Darkness’ (Ace Books, 1969), about the meeting of interplanetary
cultures.
Noted
philanthropist Honsen Lyngdoh passes away
Meghalaya’s noted
philanthropist Honsen Lyngdoh has passed away. A self-taught man, he had funded
several road construction projects in the rural areas, much before the central
government’s Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana came into existence.
Hugh Masekela,
‘Father of South African Jazz’ Passes Away
Trumpeter,
composer and singer Hugh Masekela, affectionately known as the ‘father of South African
jazz’, has died after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 78.
