1. Festival of India being Organized in Cote D’ivoire, Liberia and Guinea
A Festival of India is being organized in Cote d’Ivoire and concurrently accredited countries of Liberia and Guinea from 15 August, 2017 – 28 January, 2018.
  • The Festival will showcase diverse Indian culture, i.e. classical and folk dances.
  • The events will be held in four cities of Cote d’Ivoire, namely, Abidjan, Yamassoukro and Grand Bassam and Daloa and capital cities of Monrovia of Liberia and Conakry of Guinea.

Ministry of Defence approves delegation of Powers to Border Roads Organisation (BRO)
On August 20 2017,The Ministry of Defence has decided to delegate administrative and financial powers to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to overcome delays in the construction of strategic roads along the India-China border.
According to the references between the Chief Engineer and HQ DGBR and also between HQ DGBR and the Ministry, the defence ministry has assigned more administrative and financial powers to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for increase the speed to complete the projects.

1. Emma Stone Named as 2017’s Highest-Paid Female Actor
Emma Stone has been named Hollywood’s best-paid female actor in Forbes’ annual list of top earners.
  • The 28-year-old made $26m in the last 12 months, the majority of which was earned from her Oscar-winning performance in the musical romance La La Land. The film made over $445m worldwide.
  • Stone was closely followed by Jennifer Aniston with $25.5m, yet the majority of Aniston’s earnings have come from endorsements, such as SmartWater and Emirates airlines.
  • Last year’s no 1, Jennifer Lawrence, is in third place with $24m.

1. Italy to Host G-7 Interior Ministers' Summit
Italy will host a summit of G-7 interior ministers centered on security issues.
  • According to Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti, the meeting is being organized at the request of Italy's G-7 partners namely Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States.
  • Italy currently holds the rotating helm of the G-7 industrialized nations.
  • The summit is expected to be held in October.

Govt asks Google, Facebook, Microsoft, others to remove Blue Whale link.
The government has directed internet majors Google, Facebook, Whats App, Instagram, Microsoft and Yahoo to immediately remove links of the dangerous online game Blue Whale Challenge. It leads to suicides of children in India and other countries.
  1. The Blue Whale game was created by a 22-year-old Russian named Philipp Budeikin who, in an interview, confessed that he was directly responsible for at least 17 teenagers in Russia committing suicide.
  2. Budeikin was arrested in May 2017 and was sentenced to three years in prison.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY
1. World Health Organisation declares Somalia free of polio
The UN World Health Organisation (WHO) said that it had not recorded any case of polio disease in Somalia in the last three years, declaring the country polio free.
The WHO said the country recorded the last case of polio in 2014 in the central part of the country but has since then remained free of the paralyzing disease.
The UN health agency, however, warned Somalia remained vulnerable, calling for continued vaccination campaign.
The head of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean, which covers Somalia, Mohamed Fiqi said that massive vaccination campaigns and commitment from government and international actors had ensured the polio virus did not recur in the Horn of Africa country.

1. India, Russia to hold mega war games in October
In the midst of evolving security situation in the region, India and Russia will hold a mega war game in October involving their armies, navies and the air forces for the first time to further ramp up military ties.
•    The exercise Indra, which will be held in Russia from October 19 to 29, will primarily focus on achieving coordination between forces of the two countries in a tri- services integrated theatre command scenario.
•    It will be for the first time India will participate in a tri-services exercise with a foreign country with such large scale participation by the Navy, the Army and the Air Force.

1. Environment Minister launches ‘Gaj Yatra’ to mark World Elephant Day
Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, launched ‘Gaj Yatra’, a nationwide campaign to protect elephants on the occasion of World Elephant Day.
  • The campaign is planned to cover 12 elephant range states. The Environment Minister released the All India Census 2017 Report on elephants as also the Agreed Points of Action on Trans-Boundary Conservation of Elephants by India and Bangladesh and a document titled ‘Right of Passage’ on elephant corridors in India.
  • The ‘Gaju’ mascot, which was released by the Ministry in 2012, will be helm the campaign. The campaign will be led by the Wildlife Trust of India.
  • Actor and wildlife enthusiast, Ms. Dia Mirza, participated in the walk and run event organised on the occasion along with the children.

1. 15th BIMSTEC ministerial meeting in Kathmandu
The working session of the 15th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, BIMSTEC, Ministerial meeting held in Kathmandu.
  • Describing BIMSTEC as a “natural choice” for India to fulfill its key foreign policy priorities of ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said the grouping enjoys the unique strengths of connecting South and Southeast Asia.
  • India was hosting the first BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise in October 2017. “This will help the group countries to develop quicker, coordinated and comprehensive responses to disasters, and provide timely relief and rehabilitation,”
  • India also identified the energy sector as a key area of cooperation and noted that cross-border exchange of power between India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh is on a rapid upswing.

Government to expand Logistics Data Bank project to South India
Government will soon expand operation of Logistics Data Bank (LDB) project to India’s southern region. So far, it had covered only the western logistics corridor.
1.      Logistics Data Bank (LDB) project was unveiled in July 2016 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai with an aim to bring efficiency in the current Logistics & Supply Chain environment through use of information technology that would be helpful for tracking and viewing the movement of containers across the port.
2.      The LDB is being implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle called Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Logistics Data Services Ltd. (DLDSL) — that is jointly (50:50) owned by the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) Trust and Japanese IT services major NEC Corporation.
